Moreover, women are less likely to actually take the time off too. 77% of female employees ages 18-34 who received vacation time took time off in the past yearcompared to 93% of men of the same age range who took time off in the past year. Employees sometimes use paid time off to look for another jobIts sad but true. Data shows that over one in ten, or 12%, of employees surveyed , said they had used paid-time off or vacation time in the past year to interview for another job. Its probably not a good sign to work for a company where you hav e trouble getting time off just to go do an interview somewhere elseThe more money you make, the more on you are expected to beMaking more money sounds great, right? That is until you realize that the more you make, the less vacation time you get. Employees who earn a household income of $100K+ (27%) are more likely than those with a house hold income of $50-$74.9K (15%) to indicate that they are expected to stay aware of work issues and help out if something needs their attention, even if they are on vacation and using their paid time-off. Moreover, it gets even unhealthier. 8% of those who work while on vacation say they drink alcohol while attending to work issues. 34% say they work on vacation because they fear getting behind on their work and 13% of respondents say they are afraid they will lose their job if they dont keep up with the work while they are gone. Lastly 7% of employees who take time off are afraid of their boss, so they continue working while on vacation.If you ha ve a high position that pays well, no one else can do your job while youre on PTO30% of employees say that they have to keep working even when on PTO because there is no one else at their company who can do their work when they are out. Data shows that, among employees who took vacation time in the past year, 24% of those with an income of $50K or more were more likely than the 6% of those with an income of less than $50K to say that they worked while on vacation because no one else at their job could do their work while they were gone.Moreover, those with an income of $75K or more were more likely than those with an income of less than $50K to say that they have worked on vacation because they feel like they can never completely disconnect with their work because of their responsibilities.The reality here is that we, as American employees, have a hard time disconnecting from work and managing our work-life balance. Whether its being afraid to fall behind or being afraid of our b oss, or if were simply so dedicated to our company that we just work all the time, we really need to get better at setting boundaries with our offices.

In one experiment, students who said they “would like to have more control” and “more power” were more likely to give extensive, detailed advice to a fictional college student than those who were not power-seeking.We do not even have to be experts on what we are guiding someone about to get a power boost. “Advice giving is a politically motivated and subtle pathway to power,” the researchers found. “Regardless of whether the advice is solicited or unsolicited, from the adviser’s perspective, the mere act of giving advice is sufficient to instill them with a sense of power.”But one word of caution to all you power-hungry advice givers: the high of giving advice comes crashing down when your wisdom is not followed. Below  are three common interview questions employers ask  to determine how you communicate- and tips on how to respond. Of course, honesty is always the best policy, but the following advice can  help guide  job seekers through their responses. Heres how to answer some of the most common interview questions about your communication style: 1. How do you prefer to communicate? (In person? Phone? Over email?) Your ability to communicate effectively, in any situation, is essential- especially as a remote employee. So, the hiring manager  likely wants to know that youre comfortable with, and/or open to all types of communication. If you truly do have a preference- maybe you are much more comfortable with email, or prefer face-to-face conversations- you can and should be upfront about that. But, so long as its true, you should  quickly follow up by  explaining that youre flexible and adaptable. One way to do that is by explaining how you realize certain ways of communicating are better in certain situations. For instance, explain how for quick, yes-or-no questions, email or IM is your normal go-to for X reason, but for longer, more in-depth conversations, you understand  phone or in-person meetings are typically more appropriate. Ask which platforms their employees, or your would-be boss, typically use throughout the day, and then share any experiences youve had with each type. You can also use this question as an opportunity to highlight some of your other best communication-related skills. For instance, mention something along the lines of, I pride myself on being a really attentive listener- and thats true no matter  which platform someone is using to talk to me. 2. How would you describe your communication style? This question might be less about your communication style, are more about how self aware you are. Sure, the hiring manager probably does want to know the answer, because it will help them determine whether youd be a good fit within a particular team, but ultimately, they may be  most focused on how you talk about yourself. So, if you think youre a fairly open, straight-forward communicator, say so with confidence. If youre a great listener, but more reserved when it comes to verbalizing your thoughts or feelings- and its something youre working on- be honest about it. The hiring manager will likely appreciate your ability to recognize this  weakness and your willingness to make improvements. What’s important with this question is that you recognize what yours is, be able to provide examples, and perhaps even the pros and cons of your style, says  Robert Glazer,  CEO of Acceleration Partners, a performance marketing agency. This demonstrates that you are self-aware and take time to assess how you not only communicate with others but how you prefer to be communicated with. 3. The Unexpected Contract You Should Write When Taking on a New Job The Unexpected Contract You Should Write When Taking on a New Job “Congratulations, Neil!” I was sitting across from an HR exec at Walmart a few years ago. His hand was outstretched, and on the desk in front of us was a crisp sheet of paper spelling out all the terms of my new promotion. I shook his hand and left doing mental cartwheels down the hall. This was it! The dream job: more money, bigger team, fancier title, more interesting work. And more total work, too. A few more meetings. A few more hours. A few more business trips. A bigger job means bigger responsibilities, which would probably mean dedicating more time and effort overall- that’s just how promotions work, I inwardly shrugged. Promotion letter in hand, I popped my head into the office of one of my mentors at the company: “Guess what! I got the big promotion.” “Congratulations!” he said. “Are you going to accept it?” What did he mean, Was I going to accept it? “Well, it feels like a slam dunk,” I replied, wondering what he was getting at. “I feel like I should sign this right now and head straight back to the SVP’s office.” “Go ahead and sign it,” he said with smile. “But it’s a big job! You’ll be leading a large team and on the road a lot. So, before you hand it back in, make sure you take the contract home, share it with your wife, and write up another contract, too- a family contract. One between you and her. The company is changing all your terms, aren’t they? So, make sure you revisit all your home terms, too.” He had a point. Many of us have contracts with our employers, but few of us have contracts with our partners. Strange as it sounds, I went home that night and pitched the idea to my wife, Leslie. We both agreed it was a smart move to think deliberately about how changes in either of our careers might affect work-life balance for both of us. So, we sat down and spent a long time that night discussing things. At the end, we arrived at a short contract with four key bullet points whose terms are still in force today: 1. Nights Away As a parent, it breaks my heart to miss bath time. Knowing there’s a finite number of these nights in our lives, Leslie weighed approximately how many nights per year I might have to be away in the new role. We came up with a number that we could both live with. Then, we began tracking it. The nights-away cap we’d agreed to was easy to break down per month, so if I had a really busy month (say, a conference out of town) then I knew I’d need to cut back on travel the next month to make up for it. No, I never actually told my boss, “Sorry, I’ve hit my quota, send someone else!” In fact, just tracking things helped me stop sweating every business trip. I simply counted them toward an annual number. Plus, if I ever fumbled this bullet point, I knew I’d have to make it up on one of the subsequent three (there’s only so much control you have when you’re working for someone else). Can this hamper your career? Absolutely. Let’s not pretend you can have everything. Come up with a number that works for your family, and stick with it. Family Day We decided it was important for us to have one family day every weekend- a full day with no cell phones, no extended family, no friends, nothing. Just me, my wife, our two little kids, and zero interruptions. Before setting this down in writing, so many weekends would rush past in a blur of gymnastics, birthday parties, and extended family dinners. They were fun! But there was no deep family time for just us four. To be honest, sticking to this bullet point has been really tough. Sometimes you feel terrible declining an invitation to an outing or get-together you know will be really special. But prioritizing one family day every weekend creates energy, and it helps you be choosier about your commitments. After all, there’s a real risk in saying “yes” to things reflexively. 3. Nights Out The third item in our contract reads “NNO/LNO:” “Neil’s Night Out/Leslie’s Night Out.” This is a fun one. Once a week, we each get one night to do whatever we feel like. That can mean dinner with a friend, catching some live music by myself, spinning around in circles in empty parking lots- hey, who cares, it’s my night off! Leslie gets her own each week, too. Again, energy is the priceless commodity here. It’s too easy to collapse on the couch in a Netflix coma once the kids are in bed. These regular night-out appointments help us plan to prioritize ourselves and maintain our other relationships, too. I feel like a great father and husband both before and after I go away on business, because I get energy from those nights to carry me through the time I’m away. Plus, I get my own stories and experiences to bring back into the home while continuing to develop my life as an individual. The best part is there’s no guilt, since my wife and I both practice this habit in equal proportion (so in a way our two nights “pay for” each other). The two nights end up feeling like a gift to each other- even when we (admittedly) need to push one another to actually take them during a tiring week. But most of us aren’t taking real vacation. We either don’t take all our days- by some recent estimates most Americans leave paid time-off that they’re entitled to on the table- or we work while we’re away. It’s also worth noting that some companies have policies where you can either buy additional vacation days or take unpaid personal days. What’s my point? Simply that it’s one thing for your employer to tell you what you get and another for you and your family to decide what you want to take. After all, vacation time is one of the things many people don’t bother to negotiate when they’re considering a new job offer or weighing a promotion. In fact, you might even be able to swap out something smaller, like a bonus, for more vacation time if you ask for it. After finalizing our contract, I took advantage each year of a policy at Walmart that let me apply for an extra couple weeks of unpaid leave, and then took the 5% annual hit to my salary. It was a worthwhile tradeoff for the extra time with my family, and I never noticed the funds that were being skimmed off the top. That’s it! Four bullet points- but they couldn’t be more important. Everybody will have a different set of terms that matter to them and their partner. Maybe yours will involve school drop-off and pickup, or whether or not you work from home certain days of the week. In any case, you don’t have to march into work and share this work-life contract with your boss. The point is simply to help you articulate your values, then actually express them in how you live. I’ve actually found this helps me make smarter, speedier decisions about the way I’m spending my time. For instance, if I can’t avoid traveling on a weekend and miss a family day, then I automatically know I need to book two back-to-back family days on an upcoming weekend. Good excuse for a road trip! As you think about a contract that works with you and your partner, remember that the goal is never to be perfect. It’s simply to be a little better- and more balanced- than before. But will all that hard work result in a resume that matches what employers are looking for? A successful resume doesnt just showcase your work; it matches recruiters and hiring managers expectations, clearly conveys that youre a good fit for the role, and above all, is easy to read and understand. What Employers Look for in a Resume Here is a look at some of the things that employers look for in a resume. This insight will help you make sure your resume matches employers expectations and desires.   Ease of Reading Your resume should be written in a reasonably sized, legible font, and have normal-sized margins. Dont make hiring managers or potential interviewers wonder if they need a prescription for reading glasses -  a too-tiny font is a sign you should cut some copy, or expand your resume onto a second page. Be mindful that your resume is easy to read both on screen and in a printed out hard copy. Scanability While you should labor over choosing the best action words and power verbs for your resume, and ensuring that everything is phrased perfectly, know that few hiring managers are actually reading your resume. Rather, they are speedily scanning the page, looking for keywords, job titles, and major facts that will show if you are a good fit for the position. Make it easy for employers to find this valuable information  -  include enough white space between lines and in the margins to make it scannable, and also put the focus on the relevant information. Qualifications An employers number one goal is to find a well-qualified candidate. How can you show that youre qualified, and the best possible person for the job? Start by matching your qualifications to the job -  if employers are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, make sure your organizational skills and ability to manage lots of projects without mistakes is on display. In the job descriptions on your resume, go beyond listing day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. Think bigger: Employers want to know what youll accomplish if youre hired on. Give them a sense of your abilities by putting your achievements - whether its overhauling an inefficient system, saving the company money, or generating sales revenue -  on display. And make sure that most relevant accomplishments, the ones that readily translate to the job you want,  are most visible. Coherent Story Relevance is important when it comes to resumes - its not that employers are lazy, but that its in your best interest to make it as easy as possible for them to understand you as a candidate. Did you switch careers mid-stream? Consider leaving off some of the jobs from your first career, or grouping the job titles together with a very limited description. And, if its been decades since your first job, then its likely time to remove it from your resume. Use your resume to draw as straight a line as possible between your experience and accomplishments, and the job you want. If possible, try to show your career progression, too. Ideally, a resume should show that with each new role, you took on new challenges and increased responsibilities. Formatting Perhaps its a bit old-fashioned, but there is a certain traditional format and style to resumes. If you are going to break the rules, do so knowingly and carefully. Employers are looking to see if you can put together a presentable document. This is true for all jobs, but particularly positions where communications and presentation matter. Keep formatting consistent throughout the document. Hiring managers see a lot of resumes, so they know what should be included, such as contact information, education, etc. Make sure all of the expected information is in place. Avoid These Deal-Breakers Here are some easy ways to make recruiters flip past your resume, or reject it outright: Typos: Catching your own typos is very, very hard. If so, chances are, they prefer communicating with you online more than any other method.New research from global organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry found that when it comes to communication, 55% of survey respondents said that millennial managers mostly get their message across to their employees via “online messaging,” compared to 14% who chose to do so “in person.”Thirty-seven percent of respondents said that they “agree to some extent” that older managers (like those in Gen X and Baby Boomers) believe that they “work harder than millennial bosses.”According to the press release, “more than 1,500 professionals” took part in the survey. Millennials were defined as those born between the years 1981 and 1996. Here are some of the points that stood out.30% see millennial bosses as “somewhat worse” than older leadersThe research found that the second most-popular way that people said millennial managers communicate with those wh o work for them is email, with 28% choosing this option. The least popular method is via phone, at 3%.Samantha Wallace, Korn Ferry Futurestep North American Market Leader, Technology, commented on the research in a statement:“The way bosses communicate with their staff has a huge impact on organizational culture. … Millennials grew up using screens as their primary form of interaction, and while online messaging and email are effective, efficient tools, face-to-face communication is needed to create an inclusive culture.”When survey respondents were asked how millennial bosses do in the “managing up” department versus older people, the largest number of them said they’re “somewhat worse” at it, at 30%. Twenty-two percent said millennial supervisors are “somewhat better,” 20% said both groups are equally as good at it, while 17% said millennials are “much better” and 11% said they’re “much worse.” “Managing up” was defined as keeping their bosses in the loop and “following through on executive initiatives.”Most agree that older managers think they’re harder workersA combined  70% of respondents said they either “agree to a great extent” or “agree to some extent” that older managers (Baby Boomers and Get X) believe that “they work harder than millennial bosses.”Twenty-seven percent had a neutral opinion on this topic, while a combined 3% either disagreed “to some extent” or “to a great extent.”When it comes to interviewing millennials for jobs at the management level,  25% of respondents said these young people consider “a good work-life balance” to be the most crucial aspect.
